Vertical digital signage TVs are an effective way to display content in a space-saving manner. They are ideal for tight spaces, such as narrow hallways or elevators, where a standard digital signage display would take up too much space.

You can also use vertical digital signage TVs to display information such as menus, ads, and product details in a more engaging and eye-catching way. They also use the latest technologies, such as digital signage software, to provide a more interactive and customizable experience.

Many people have requested assistance with portrait-oriented presentations using their TV in vertical mode. This article will provide an overview of how to use vertical digital signage in portrait orientation.

Vertical (Portrait) Digital Signage Mode

Vertical displays don't just look great – they can also be incredibly beneficial for engagement and space management.

Some content needs a lot of vertical space. For content like weather, a vertical monitor is ideal. This guide provides instructions for setting up vertical displays for your TV as digital signage.

A vertical display is a regular monitor or TV rotated 90 degrees from its usual horizontal orientation.

You can easily set up your own vertical display setup by following the instructions in this guide. With a vertical TV setup, you can take advantage of the full space available on your displays, allowing you to display better digital menus, product information, advertisements, and more.

Going Vertical

When selecting a digital signage display, choosing the right screen for your needs is essential. Landscape orientation is the most popular choice due to its versatility and familiarity, as most consumer-grade TVs and video programming are set up this way.

The best thing about vertical digital signage displays is that they can fit into any vertical space without taking up much space. They offer a great way to draw attention to your content, as they provide an eye-catching and creative way to display your information.

Your business can also use vertical digital signage displays to create interactive experiences, as they are well-suited for touchscreens.

Studies have shown that people are more likely to remember and recall information presented in a landscape format, as this is more in line with the natural human field of vision, which is typically wider than longer. You can also use portrait orientation, but it is less common and less effective for presenting and retaining information.

Customers who opt for portrait mode usually have a particular goal in mind. Vertical screens are often used to carry out product campaigns with unique branding or to display specific visual ideas.

These screens may be hung at the entrance of a business to showcase information such as digital menu boards, building directories, and wayfinding, giving visitors an insight into the company's offers.

For vertical TVs, you can enjoy various entertaining content. For example, the Youtube shorts feature can be viewed on TV. This will give you excellent means to engage your audience with funny, creative videos directly from YouTube. Shorts will only be effective on a vertical TV in portrait mode.

Now let us look at how to set up TV portrait mode for vertical display with your Android TV.

Set Up TV Portrait Mode on Android TV

Most consumers who purchase an Android TV box typically use it to watch videos, browse the web, and play games, making landscape mode the preferred orientation.

Typically, the orientation option is disabled in the firmware, but TV boxes can also be used as digital signage players, which may require landscape or portrait modes if the screen is mounted vertically.

This purpose is served by many apps available in the Google Play Store for Android TVs. Android TV apps come in a few different varieties. There are Android TV apps specifically designed for the big screen and the lack of touchscreen controls, which you can find in the Android TV Play Store.

Then other apps may be compatible with Android TV but are not pushed forward as Android TV apps and are not displayed in the Play Store. These can be sideloaded onto an Android TV device. Some apps are not recognized as Android TV apps that can be sideloaded and will work but may have display or formatting issues.

A good app that works well with Android TVs is called Screen Rotation Control. All you have to do is rotate your TV in the direction you want to set it up. Launch the app and choose your preferred orientation. There are at least four different sides you can pick from.

However, if you have a Samsung TV, you can easily rotate the screen right on the TV. With its new rotating TV models, Samsung has taken its technology to the next level. These Samsung TVs can switch between the usual landscape and vertical portrait modes like mobile phones.

If you're having difficulty switching your Samsung TV from landscape to portrait mode, or if you are just now discovering the excellent rotating feature of your Sero TV, here are the easiest ways to enjoy mobile video viewing with portrait mode:

  • Access the Settings menu on your TV.
  • Select the Picture option and choose the Orientation option.
  • Select the Portrait mode.
  • Enjoy your mobile video viewing experience with portrait mode!

How to Rotate the Screen on Windows 11 or 10

Most people use their monitors and displays in landscape mode. They also connect them by HDMI or other connections to the PC running Windows 10 or 11.

Using these displays in portrait mode is better than having different orientations for each display in a multi-monitor setup. Luckily, it's easy to make Windows respect that choice.

Although experienced PC users may remember that one could rotate the screen via keyboard shortcuts, this option was removed in later updates of Windows 10 and is not available in Windows 11 either.

Thus, if one wishes to change the screen's orientation, one must use the graphical user interface instead. Fortunately, this makes it much less likely that you will accidentally end up with an upside-down desktop.

To rotate the screen on Windows 11 and 10, one can go to the display settings in the control panel. There, they can select the desired orientation of the screen.

To rotate the screen on Windows 11 or 10, one should navigate to the Display page in Settings. The fastest way to access this page is to right-click on the desktop and select the "Display settings" option.

Alternatively, you can search for "Rotate" via the Start menu; both methods lead to the Display page in the Settings app. From here, you can select the monitors or displays connected to the PC and click the button inside the "Display orientation” box.

Select one of four options to change your display orientation: Landscape, Portrait, Landscape (flipped), or Portrait (flipped). Once you have chosen your preferred orientation, click 'Keep Changes' to save the settings. After your screen is rotated, a small window will pop up with two buttons: "Keep Changes" and "Revert."

Choosing the former will save your current screen orientation, while the latter will restore the previous setting. If you do not click any of the buttons, the screen orientation will automatically revert to its previous setting after a 10-second delay.

Changing the orientation of your monitor in Windows 11 is easy; all you need to do is head to the Settings app and adjust the orientation there. However, if you're using a different graphics card, you may be able to access different orientation settings through the graphics card's control panel.

How to Rotate Your Screen Via Graphics Control Panels

You can use the Nvidia Control Panel (or Intel or AMD's Control Panel) to rotate your screen in Windows 11 (or Windows 10, which has a similar Settings app).

This is similar to the control panels that adjust the color profile, refresh rate, and other settings. This section will focus on how to do this using the Nvidia Control Panel, which we've tested on our system. The steps for Intel and AMD graphics cards are similar.

To access the display settings in your graphics control panel, the quickest way to do this is to right-click on the display, select "Show more options" (or press Shift + F10), and then click "Nvidia Control Panel" in the window that appears. You can also find the program in the Start menu's search tool.

To rotate your display, head to the "Display" section of the Nvidia Control Panel and select the "Rotate Display" option (or its equivalent). To rotate your screen in Windows 11 or Windows 10, you have two options: you can use the Settings app or the graphics card control panel.

In the Settings app, you can choose your preferred screen orientation from four available options [1]: Landscape, Portrait, Landscape (flipped), or Portrait (flipped).

That's all there is to it - now you can escape the confines of landscape mode on your desired digital signage displays.

Work With The Best Display

It is recommended to maintain one orientation rather than changing it frequently to minimize design and administration costs. This will help reduce the amount of time and resources you need to invest in maintaining the system. Consider the following when looking to change your display orientation.

1. Consumer or Commercial-Grade TV?

To answer the question of whether to use a consumer-grade or commercial-grade TV screen, it's important to consider the needs of your business, the expected uptime, and the number of displays within a cycle.

If you need your screens to be operational 24/7, you should opt for a product with greater longevity and durability that is easy to maintain and service.

In this case, buying a commercial-grade digital signage screen is recommended instead of a regular TV. It is designed to withstand customer demands and provide the highest quality content, regardless of whether you are displaying in landscape or portrait orientation.

2. Scale of Installation

Once you have decided to purchase a commercial-grade screen, your options become more varied. For example, you could create a focal point with a video wall, turning the whole wall into a screen with plenty of movement and color.

Alternatively, you could opt for a simpler display, such as individual monitors, displaying different content on each screen. Digital screens allow you to customize your visuals based on your business's branding needs.

3. Viewing Distance

It is important to consider the space where the screen will be installed and its size for the optimum viewing experience. The viewing distance is also critical, as it affects the perceived display quality.

Some of the pixels may become invisible if the viewer is too far away. For example, a high-resolution screen a few feet away can lead to this issue, whereas with a video wall, pixels may become invisible from many feet away.

If you plan to use a touch screen, it is safe to assume that customers will operate it from an arm's length away. Considering how far away or close a person will be when interacting with the display will allow you to choose the proper resolution and size so that it has the right density of pixels.

4. Viewer Experience

Before deciding on a display, it is essential to consider what experience you want your users to have. Consider the project's complexity, budget, scope, commercial requirements, user behavior, and physical size when deciding what the customer will need to experience.

Consider the orientation you will use - landscape or portrait - and consider all of these factors. This will help you make the best decision for your customers.
